Cupid may not have been the only one aiming an arrow at the Leominster Sportsmen’s Club recently as a couple exchanged wedding vows.
After all, the pair – Joseph A. Pearson and Joanne C. Gadoury – and their attendants were standing on an archery platform 15 feet above the ground and were dressed in camouflage outfits.
Surprisingly, this wedding was not the most unusual ever performed by Justice of the Peace Arthur J. Thomas. Like many other justices of the peace, Thomas has performed weddings in some pretty unusual places.
He performed one ceremony for a couple while flying above Cape Cod in a small private plane. Six people, including the pilot, witnessed the exchange of vows. “The husband always wanted to do something different. He did,” Thomas said.
Thomas also performed a Halloween wedding at midnight at the entrance to a cemetery. He said the decorations were black balloons and orange candles, and the wedding party and all the guests were in costumes.
The bride, dressed as the bride of Frankenstein, wore a high- collared black cape, green face makeup and heavy black eye liner. The groom was dressed as Dracula. “They exchanged skull-and- crossbones rings,” Thomas said.
Thomas believes in keeping an open mind. “I’m willing to accommodate couples at all times. As long as it’s in good taste, I’ll perform any wedding in any location,” he said.
That’s how Thomas found himself perched on the 6-by-6-foot archery stand as he pronounced Pearson and Gadoury husband and wife. About 120 guests cheered as the couple exchanged rings.
The archery wedding was the brainchild of Pearson and Paul Tocci, a longtime member of the sportsmen’s club. They came up with the wedding ceremony ideas when Pearson approached Tocci in February to request a ceremony at the club.
Gadoury said she approved of the wedding ceremony ideas. “This is how we met, shooting archery in the indoor league,” she said. “It’s the second marriage for the both of us. We thought we’d have fun the second time around.”
Pearson was dressed in full camouflage, with a hunting knife strapped to his waist. Gadoury emerged from a camping trailer dressed in a khaki-colored dress, with turkey netting around her chest and waist.
The club hall was decorated in black, green and tan crepe streamers for the reception. Behind the head table were three- dimensional targets of two deer and a standing bear.
Thomas is not the only area justice of the peace who has performed unusual wedding ceremony ideas.
Esther B. Kamman, a justice of the peace from Gardner, said she also performed a ceremony in midair. The couple exchanged vows with three adults and three young children present in the basket of a hot- air balloon.
Kamman recalled that it took three tries before the ceremony was performed. On the first two mornings, liftoff was canceled because of sudden wind shifts. The ceremony finally took place at noon the third day.
Closer to the ground, Kamman performed a ceremony at a golf course on the sixth hole. “Evidently, it was his lucky charm,” she said.
Justices of the peace have learned from their many experiences that “you have to have a sense of humor,” according to Justice of the Peace Sheila Tarbell of Fitchburg. “Most of the time you don’t know what to expect.”
One afternoon while she was swimming in her backyard pool, she was interrupted by the front door bell. When she answered, a young couple informed her they wanted to be married – now.
She was still dressed in her bathing suit, she said, and she remembers excusing herself to put on a robe before marrying the couple.
Worcester Justice of the Peace Jane D. Pignataro recalls a bride who exchanged vows while in labor in a hospital room. Three minutes after the ceremony, she said, the bride gave birth to a baby boy.

Well, the most traditional puts the wedding invitation in the bride’s parents’ voice, but I would say that just as many brides and grooms today choose to use their own voices. They are just more independent and more involved in their weddings. After all, in the traditional rsvp wording the title of the bride is “daughter of” and the groom is “Master” or “Doctor.” But I have noticed that as independent as we’ve become, we quite often in life’s big moments-like birth and marriage-return to tradition and to what is customary in our background, so many brides do still choose to use the parents’ voice. I think it’s a way– during life’s scary moments–to feel a part of a continuum. Read more…
